Eric Gelling's Pages, Grade 3, Willows, 1954, Div. 10

A Summer's Day at Willows

.....

Yellowed, well used and a tad wrinkled but otherwise in great condition. Restoration has been a breeze with Eric's prints to this point.

.

Gibson fails us a little here but just a little; the highlights are blocked. The magic of software that allows "grow your own" variable gamma for the print has allowed recovery of what data there are in the highlights. That fancy curve in the gamma has brought out the wrinkles, too, but then they are honourable marks of distinction and of long service. Gibson had a tough assignment in the harsh light of midday in summer. Contemporary film and paper would have done the job with more grace. Apart from the highlights, the tones are again superb. Had the lab. staff not fixed and washed these prints so diligently, the delicious detail would have faded years ago.

Exquisite! Are you in love with the backs of Eric's photographs too?

35 cents and holding.
